Clean Roof of Mold and Algae
Often mistaken for mold, algae and moss are more common on roofs. Even though it’s unsightly, algae and moss can be less harmful to roof shingles. You should still get it cleaned as soon as possible to avoid more growth that can cause shingles to lift and debris to become stuck beneath.
You can use trisodium (TSP) or oxygenated bleach to remove moss or algae from your roof. Some contractors will also suggest mixing bleach and water 50/50. It’s important not to use any chemical treatments because the runoff water can damage metal, wood or landscaping around your home. Be sure to read the instructions and use the correct amount. Call a roofer to do the job for you.
Mold is not the same as algae or moss. It may be difficult to get rid of mold. If you see mold growing in any part of your house, it could be a sign that there is a problem with ventilation or moisture. If you do not address the underlying problems, the mold can return even if it is removed from the surface. Mold can also be a problem if it is discovered too late. It could have rotted or damaged construction materials that need to be replaced.
Mold growth can be a health hazard. We do not recommend that you clean it by yourself. Call a professional roofing contractor to help you identify the source of the mold, assess the damage, and sanitize affected areas. They can also tell you what steps to take to stop it from returning.
What NOT to do when cleaning your roof
There are many ways to prevent or treat mold and algae on your roof. However, you should not use any of them. This includes:
What appears to be a roof being washed is actually granules being removed from your shingles. It’s easy to reduce the life of your roof by pressure washing!
Scrubbing aggressively: Similar to pressure washing your roof, aggressively scrubbing your roof will cause it to deteriorate faster. The wrong tool or the wrong way to scrub can damage your shingles and require repairs sooner rather than later.
Use harsh chemicals. There are many different types of cleaners, and some are harsher than others. Always make sure to use the correct solution for your roof’s problem. Remember that any chemical applied to your roof is likely to wash off and affect the rest of your house or landscape. You can damage other areas of your house or harm your plants and lawn by using harsh chemicals.
